HAMARTIA

HAMARTIA

The word "Hamartia" is taken from the Greek word "Hamartanein" meaning "To miss the mark or err." Aristotle was the first who used this term in his work "Poetics",Where it is taken as mistake or error in judgement. Hamartia is a personal error in protagonist personality that bring about his tragic downfall in a Tragedy. This is also known to us as "Tragic Flaw".

EXAMPLE

“Oedipus” in a famous Greek tragedy is a perfect example of hamartia i.e. his downfall is cause by unintentional wrongdoings.....

In Macbeth, Macbeth's "Hamartia is his vaulting ambitious......

In Hamlet, Hamlet's Hamartia is his indecisiveness........ In

Marlowe’s “Doctor Faustus”, The tragic flaw of Faustus was his ambitious nature.
